St Patrick's Day 2020 - Covid-19 Lockdown

St Patrick's Day 2020 - Covid-19 Lockdown

So this is a different St Patrick's Day to any other year I've known - no dressing up in every piece of green clothing in the wardrobe, no walking in and watching parades with local groups, no meeting up with friends and no carrying on with dance and music - all completely surreal. This #Covid19 is throwing everything a loop, and it's hard to think the world is at a standstill at what has always been a massive day of public celebrating the world over.

But this is a time to count your blessings, and we are fortunate not to be sick and not to have lost any loved ones.

There has been such an incredible outreach of community groups, and while we are all struggling with how to earn our crust to pay the bills, it's hugely heartwarming to see how outward people are looking, to see how they might help others in less fortunate circumstances.

Around this time of the day I'd usually be dashing to collect kids from school to rush back to the coffee shop to finish the day while they do their homework. And usually I'd be giving out about the homework that takes so long after half the day in school already. While trying to coordinate activities for the afternoon and evening - the usual mummy taxi running.

But today we are all together and we are healthy. And we're not rushing, and there's no homework to plough through. The fridge is well-stocked and we have plenty of time to make lovely meals and bake bread. We've been for walks and are enjoying the books we've borrowed from the library in between movies and art challenges. We've reconnected with our neighbours (at a suitable social distance of course!) and we're chatting with family - thank goodness for video-calling!

So we'll not dwell on the strangeness of the day anymore, and instead we'll be grateful for all those good things we do have.

Wishing you all health and happiness.
