Following on from our introductory workshop on unplugged woodworking with our partner artist David Keys, we now bring you a 4-part series of classes to develop your skills.

Over the course of 4 Friday evenings for 2 hours each evening, you will develop the basic wood carving skills David showed you in making your bud vases, developing these in the creation of a tripod mug stool (which we think is very fitting indeed - just the perfect thing upon which to place an excellent coffee!) carving each leg and finishing your tree trunk slice, then working with mortice and tendon joints to secure these together.

We will then refine these skills in making some smaller items such as necklace pendants with copper wire, heart and fox shapes or coasters, to be decided by participants during the course.

We will also aim to include ring printing, where the beauty of a natural tree trunk slice is enhanced through torch flaming, then painted and rolled to produce a beautiful print to frame.

This is an unplugged, hand-tool workshop without any electrical tools. Using tools from an older era where woodwork was all done by hand, David will show us the skills of carving raw wood using draw knives and spokeshaves on a traditional shavehorse used to clamp the workpiece, through methods and techniques that have long-predated modern plug-in tools.

Using natural, raw wood, David is respectful of nature and what it can deliver to us, avoiding anything from the mass-machined industry. This is a step back into a time of hand-skills taught master to apprentice, through practice and patience.

Please note: this is designed as a follow-on from our introductory workshop, so you will need to have basic carving skills using old hand-tools to benefit from these classes.

Numbers are limited to 6 participants to ensure David can provide full tutelage to each participant.

No previous experience necessary - just an interest in a slower, gentler way of working with wood and a process that produces calming peace.

Price includes all materials and refreshments each evening.
